Celebration of Frankie Kennedy Featuring Altan & Special Guest Mary Chapin Carpenter
In 2014 Altan will commemorate the life and music of one of their founding members, Frankie Kennedy. It has been 20 years since his passing and the band want to acknowledge this with a series of concerts and tours featuring musicians and singers associated with the band and Frankie. Altan will be joined on stage for this very special night by long time friend, Mary Chapin Carpenter. American singer songwriter Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards and was recently inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Frankie’s vision for Altan was very clear, to keep the music pure and traditional and by backing it with modern ideas and rhythms. As far as he was concerned , the music spoke for itself, no need to dilute it with other music or genres to make it more attractive commercially. Integrity was the bottom line. The music itself in its purest form had the drive, the passion and the honesty of expression.
Altan toured extensively especially the USA during the initial years carving a niche in the market and galvanizing a good following both in Europe and the USA. His vision proved right, as Altan was the very first traditional Irish traditional music band to have been signed by a major record label. Virgin signed the band in 1994 and their first release, Blackwater, coincided with the loss of Frankie through cancer at the tender age of 38 years of age.
Altan have continued his journey and have gone from strength to strength and this year celebrate Frankie’s memory through friends through music.
