Temple Bar TradFest regrets the passing of Barney McKenna

Temple Bar Trad Fest regrets the passing of Barney McKenna. Temple Bar Traders limited, the company behind the Temple Bar Trad Fest regrets the recent passing of Barney McKenna, one of Dublin’s best loved musicians and founding member of the Dubliners Folk Group.
Tradfest Artistic Director, Kieran Hanrahan said “From a musical point of view, he was the stenor banjo in traditional music from the 1960s. He popularised it. He inspired a whole generation.”
He described McKenna as one of “life’s gentlemen” and one of the most entertaining people you could meet. “On a personal level he was such a decent, generous, humble man. He wore his talent very lightly.”
The Temple Bar Tradfest 2012 played host to Barney McKennas last ever Irish performance with the Dubliners where they celebrated their 50th anniversary with a series of concerts at Christchurch Cathedral. We would like to extend our condolances to the McKenna family and the other members of the Dubliners.
